The past few weeks I haven’t had the best luck with technology. First, I failed to remove my fitbit from an item of clothing and then ran it through the washing machine. Oops.
Then, I thought I had only lost my iPhone but there is no other explanation than that it was possibly stolen right out of my shopping cart at the grocery store. Since I use apps while I’m shopping, I tend to just lay it right on top and so it’s easily accessible if I turn my back.
Lastly, I actually use my laptop on my lap on top of a lap desk but then store it on a shelf. I had a brainstorm of ideas that I wanted to plug into my blog the other day and went to quickly grab my laptop and lapdesk but my laptop went flying through the air and then BOUNCED multiple times on the hard wood floors. I thought they were so awesome when I came to view this apartment, but now they are not so awesome. I take my laptop to the genius bar and was just sick to my stomach. The genius interviewed me and then took my MacBook into the backroom for surgery. He returned to inform me that I had broken my hard drive but that everything else was intact. If you’ve ever been in this situation before (I have), you know that is good news. At least it wasn’t the liquid crystal display! Or the glass that covers it! At least my aluminum uni-body was not misshapen. I touched my MacBook as though I was comforting my child before it had to enter surgery. I asked how much this was going to set me back. {From this point forward in the story, you must never speak of what happened again to anyone, especially Apple employees.} The genius told me that while he did “not” fully hear my original story, he knew that I was still under warranty and that there would be no cost. I admitted to him that this was the answer to my prayer. {My prayer to God was this: Dear God, please summon Steve Jobs if he’s up there and do what needs to be done to save my baby.} The genius took my MacBook into surgery and return with it fully intact. Thankfully, I had just updated my Time Machine backup so it was like nothing had every happened, except that now my hard drive is brand new. How did I get so lucky? My only response is that God has blessed me with a new hard drive so I can continue to blog on this device for much longer!
I was also blessed in regard to the iPhone. Although I never recovered it and had to file a police report, I believe that it is in the hands of someone who will be able to use it as a lovely Christmas gift. While theft isn’t the right thing, times are tough right now. I was actually going to donate it to charity anyway when I upgraded. When I got a new phone, Apple was able to transfer the backup that was on my laptop/time machine and it was like I had never lost the data at all.
As far as the FitBit, I thought my enjoyment through exercise was over. I hadn’t been motivated to do my walks because it wasn’t counting towards my FitBit record. I also hadn’t told anyone that I did this to the FitBit because I was so embarassed with all these other technology mistakes I had made. Ugh! So today I finally decide to face the issue. I contact FitBit and ask them if there is anything that can be done to fix it. They tell me they will send me a complimentary replacement! What!? That has to be unheard of.
Anyhow, both companies are great! I also think this shows that God cares for me and is looking out for my health and well being.
